The Beginning of the Internet in Thailand

Home internet in Thailand began with the efforts of research and educational institutions during the years 1987–1992. After that, it entered the commercial service phase and experienced rapid growth, eventually leading to the present era of Fiber Optic technology — a modern innovation that significantly enhances internet performance and efficiency.

Year 1987:

  • In 1987, the internet in Thailand began with experimental data connections among academic communities, driven by National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC).

  • The UUCP (Unix-to-Unix Copy Protocol) was used to exchange emails and data with overseas partners through telecommunication systems.

The Thai government began promoting household internet adoption through various initiatives, such as:

  • Thailand ICT Master Plan: A national strategy aimed at developing the country’s digital infrastructure.

  • Universal Service Obligation (USO): A project designed to expand internet access to rural and remote areas.

The Beginning of the Internet in Thailand

Year 2000

  • ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) technology was introduced, enabling significantly faster internet connections (128 kbps – 8 Mbps).

  • Major service providers such as TOT, True Corporation, and CAT Telecom began expanding internet networks to homes and offices.

Year 2010

  • The launch of Fiber Optic technology made high-speed internet widely accessible.

  • Fiber to the Home (FTTH) services were introduced by leading providers such as True Online, 3BB, and AIS Fibre.

Year 1995:

  • Home internet services began commercially when Internet Thailand (INET) and KSC Internet became the first Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Thailand.

  • Internet connections during this era used dial-up modems over fixed telephone lines, with initial speeds of 28.8 kbps, later increasing to 56 kbps.

  • Users had to pay additional telephone charges based on the duration of their internet usage.

  • The growth of home internet in Thailand has been extremely rapid in the modern era. Competition among ISPs has helped reduce service costs while increasing internet speeds, making access more affordable and widely available to the general public.

  • Today, home internet in Thailand offers speeds of up to 1–2 Gbps and covers more than 90% of the country.
